Introduction
I deliver catalogues to letterboxes for a company in South Australia called SALMAT, I have been doing this for quite a number of years for several different companies/people as I enjoy the walking. For a couple of years now I have gradually become more and more fed-up with the wastage of so much advertising material simply because it won't fit in the letterbox or I have too much delivered to me and it's left up to me to do something with it.
This started out as an idea to try and reduce wastage and maybe get Salmat to act like half decent human beings, however I seem to have hit a nerve that I didn't plan on and these people are really starting to aggravate me with their arrogant and somewhat patronising attitude towards everyone.
Salmat pay very little for delivery (1 cent per catalogue) and seem to have the philosophy of like it or lump it, which is why this web site is here. I originally sent them an email through their form feed on their website but apparently they didn't think it deserved an answer, so I went ahead and contacted one of their major accounts in South Australia.
I set up an anonymous email address in Romania and out of curiosity I notified Harris Scarfe of exactly what happens to their catalogues. I believe I am in as good a position as anyone to explain it, since I actually put them in the letterboxes. I simply wanted to find out whether they were aware of what happens to their advertising product. Well, judging by their interest and questions to Salmat there seemed to be a few discrepancies.
Since my first email, I have received a couple of unsolicited emails from Grant Mitchell (State Manager of South Australia). He has taken great pains to explain to me that what I have told Salmat's customers is nothing new, that Salmat has previously advised them all of everything I tell them and I am simply consolidating what Salmat's customers already know. If this is true then logic would suggest that what I am doing is a complete waste of time and won't make any difference to Salmat or it's customers.
It seems that Grant does not like me using Sniper attacks through his clients (his words), but I can see nothing wrong with advising companies of a problem that they may be unaware of.
At the end of the day I have nothing to gain from this, monetary or otherwise, except the self satisfaction of doing the right thing.
I have decided to set up this website (and a few more) and put all the emails and info I have on it for the world to see. The emails are unedited and the statements I make concerning what happens to the catalogues are all from my own personal experience.
If you are a company or business who has advertising material delivered through Salmat, please form your own opinion of who's right or wrong, I do not wish to tell anyone what to do, I am simply providing information.
I think I would be more than a little concerned if I was a State Manager for a company which has me place the following disclaimer at the bottom of all of my emails:
The information contained within this e-mail may be solely the opinion of the sender and may not necessarily reflect the position, beliefs or opinions of Salmat on any issue.
Doesn't inspire much confidence does it?
